Essex County Legal Aid Association
Free emergency legal advice to poor residents of Essex County, New Jersey
About Us

If you are poor and live in Essex County NJ, we are committed to providing you with free emergency legal advice related to civil matters -- like landlord/tenant issues, family matters, etc. Founded in 1906, the Essex County Legal Aid Association is here to assure that poverty is no barrier to civil justice.

How can we provide free legal advice to more than 1,300 clients each year?  We need support from foundations, law firms, individuals, etc.  Our two major 2017 supporters are the Legal Services Foundation of Essex County ($75,000 grant) and the IOLTA Fund of the Bar of New Jersey ($37,500 grant). Based on its declining revenue sources, the IOLTA funding of ECLAA and other nonprofit legal services organizations has shrunk dramatically over the past eight years. ECLAA needs your help in closing a $43,240 funding gap (as of May 2017) to provide critical services to our low-income neighbors through the end of 2017. Our annual operating budget to serve clients Monday through Thursday each week is $155,740 in 2017.

ECLAA is a nonprofit organization (FEIN 22-1487177) that relies on tax-deductible gifts and grants from generous donors like you. To allow our office to be open four days/week through the end of 2017, we ask for your financial support.  Please contact Bob Adler, our fundraising/development director with any questions if you are a law firm, a corporation, a foundation or simply a person who cares about the ability of low-income people to receive emergency legal advice and counsel.  See some of our clients' cases by clicking on the "Real People" tab -- to read specific examples of who we help and what our support means to them. And please use our "Donate" page to support the work we do.

Thank you.
