ECLAA = free legal help on civil law crises for low-income Essex County NJ residents
If you are poor and live in Essex County NJ, the people at ECLAA are committed to providing you with free emergency legal advice related to civil matters -- like landlord/tenant issues, consumer matters, etc.
Incorporated in 1920, the Essex County Legal Aid Association is here to assure that poverty is not an impenetrable barrier to civil justice. We are celebrating our 100th anniversary this year.
How can we provide free legal advice and/or representation to more than 1,000 clients each year? We need support from foundations, law firms, individuals, etc.
Our three major 2019 supporters were the IOLTA Fund of the Bar of New Jersey ($41,300 grant), the Legal Services Foundation of Essex County (about $31,000), and the Community Foundation of New Jersey ($25,000). Our major effort in 2020 is to fill a $75,000 funding gap for fiscal year 2020 based on the 2019 dissolution of LSF, which had been a long-term supporter of ECLAA, typically at the $75,000 level.
ECLAA needs your help in closing a fiscal year 2020 funding gap of $75,000 as soon as possible, in part by seeking direct support from law firms and others who had been donating to LSF. Our annual operating cost to serve 1,080 clients Monday through Friday each week wa $172,876 in 2019.
Please look at some of our clients' cases by clicking on the "About our clients" section of this site. These are specific examples of who we help and what our support means to them.
And please use our "Make a donation" page to support the work we do. Thank you.
